Walbaum is a serif typeface available through a Microsoft 365 subscription for the Microsoft Office applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as a web font.
Restored by Monotype by Carl Crossgrove and Charles Nix, it is based on the 1800’s era type created by Justus Erich Walbaum in Germany (Microsoft Corporation, 2020). Inspired by the work of Walbaum’s son as well as 20th century sculptor Isamu Noguchi, Microsoft describes it in these words:
“…lowercase in the fattest, blackest weights are like slabs of basalt subtly sculpted to yield letters…”Microsoft
Being a Microsoft Web Font, it is available for use in Microsoft office products. Sadly, they are not freely available in external design software applications such as Inkscape or GIMP, and I am not sure if it is available in Illustrator or Photoshop.
However, over 60 variations of Walbaum are available for sale at fonts.com.
